At the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD), we are committed to fostering inclusive opportunities that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DDs). That’s why we are thrilled to support Ride Above Disability Therapeutic Riding Center (RAD), an organization that harnesses the power of horseback riding to promote confidence, independence, and physical development for individuals with disabilities.
The Impact of Therapeutic Riding
In San Diego, Ride Above Disability provides therapeutic horseback riding lessons tailored to individuals with IDDs. Beyond learning riding skills, participants benefit from improved motor function, enhanced coordination, and strengthened core muscles. More importantly, these sessions foster a sense of achievement, self-confidence, and connection with the horses and the supportive RAD community.

In addition to the riders, families also find solace in this inclusive environment. Parents and caregivers witness the growth and joy of their loved ones while connecting with other families facing similar experiences. The program builds skills and cultivates lifelong friendships and community support.
The impact of this program is best captured by David Cervantes, a participant in the program, who shares: "RAD has helped me forget about my disability, even if it's for a few hours a week, just being there and being able to mount my horse with the assistance of volunteers and with the use of a ramp. Even though things might seem difficult at times mentally, just being there and being part of a team and being able to interact with the horses is all worth it."
David’s experience highlights the profound difference that therapeutic riding can make. It offers not just physical benefits but also emotional and social support.
Breaking Barriers with FDD’s Support

Financial constraints can be a significant barrier to accessing these transformative experiences. To ensure that no individual is excluded due to cost, FDD has awarded a $5,000 grant to RAD TRC’s Low-Income Riding Program. This funding will directly support riders from low-income backgrounds, allowing them to participate in therapeutic lessons that promote personal growth, resilience, and social engagement.
By partnering with Ride Above Disability, FDD continues its mission of expanding access to essential programs that enrich the lives of individuals with IDDs. We are proud to collaborate with organizations that align with our vision of creating an inclusive, supportive, and thriving community.
