Shining a Light on Inclusion: FDD’s Support for The Shine Project Foundation

At the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD), we are dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DDs) and their families. That’s why we are proud to partner with The Shine Project Foundation, a nonprofit that enriches the lives of individuals with disabilities through monthly social programs and community events.

Through their Shine Enrichment Events, The Shine Project Foundation creates spaces where individuals with disabilities can build friendships, experience new activities, and connect with the broader community. These events enhance well-being and engagement and help bridge the gap between special needs families and the wider community, fostering understanding and inclusion.  It is also essential to provide volunteer opportunities for the youth and families to provide outreach and spread awareness of the importance of supporting our special needs families.

Bringing Joy Through Community-Based Events

Social opportunities are essential for building confidence, strengthening relationships, and fostering a sense of belonging. The Shine Project Foundation offers a variety of enrichment activities that bring individuals and families together, including:

  • Shine Jam and Discovery Arts– A lively event with music, dance, and hands-on art activities that promote self-expression, movement, and creativity.

  • Holiday Festival – A festive celebration where families can create lasting holiday memories together, and the community helps to Make the Holidays Bright with a family gift outreach.

  • Family Field Day – An inclusive day of outdoor fun, games, and bonding for individuals with disabilities and their families.

  • Food to Grow- A holistic program curated to partner with local farmers to teach the importance of healthy foods and their impact on families through hands-on activities at local farms.

  • Caring for Caregivers – A program dedicated to providing opportunities for wellness, self-care, and resources for parents and caregivers, recognizing their vital role in the well-being of their loved ones.

Each event promotes joy, connection, and a sense of community, ensuring that individuals of all abilities can enjoy enriching experiences.

FDD’s Support: Strengthening Inclusive Community Programs

To help sustain and expand these impactful programs, FDD has awarded a $5,000 grant to The Shine Project Foundation. This funding will directly support Shine Enrichment Events, enabling more individuals with disabilities and their families to participate in engaging, accessible, and inclusive activities.

By partnering with The Shine Project Foundation, FDD invests in community-driven programs that uplift and empower individuals with disabilities, ensuring they have access to meaningful experiences, social connections, and a supportive community.

The Power of Support: A Parent’s Perspective

The Shine Project Foundation isn’t just about events; it’s about building a support system for families navigating the unique challenges of raising a child with a disability.

Monique Haithcock, Parent Support Specialist, shares how Shine’s programs have made a difference in her life and the lives of others:

"As a fellow parent raising an autistic child, working with The Shine Project Foundation providing Parent Support Programs allows us to make a real difference in families like mine. Caring for caregivers is just as important as caring for our children—because when we are supported, we can show up stronger for them. Through thoughtful, inclusive programs and community-driven initiatives, we’re building a space where families can thrive and feel empowered. It’s an honor to be part of this meaningful work, supporting families and fostering a more inclusive community."
