At FDD, we believe that every community space should be accessible, welcoming, and inclusive for individuals of all abilities. This year, we are proud to support Comic-Con Museum as they continue to expand sensory-friendly accommodations for their guests — ensuring that everyone can enjoy the magic of the popular arts.

A Shared Commitment to Inclusion

Located in the heart of Balboa Park, Comic-Con Museum is known for celebrating creativity, imagination, and the stories that connect us. But behind the exhibits, the Museum is equally committed to creating an environment where all visitors feel a sense of belonging.

“Comic-Con Museum is committed to ensuring all guests feel welcome. We recognize that sometimes visitors need a few minutes in a quiet space to center themselves, and we are thrilled to make this Sensory space available to guests and their caretakers, family, and friends to support a positive Museum experience.”— Rita Vandergaw, Executive Director, Comic-Con Museum

This philosophy aligns beautifully with FDD’s mission to support programs and environments that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) across San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Transforming Space with Purpose

With support from the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities, Comic-Con Museum enhanced its existing Mother’s Room into a thoughtfully designed Low Sensory/Parent Room.

This updated space now features:

●        Neutral, soothing paint colors

●        A plush rug to create a grounded, comforting environment

●        Tactile wall pieces for sensory engagement

●        Soft LED lighting

●        A swivel chair with calming, textured fabric

This room is designed for parents with small children, as well as guests with developmental, neurological, or other sensory sensitivities. It provides a quiet retreat where visitors can pause, regulate, and return to the Museum experience feeling supported and included.

This adaptation helps the Museum better serve neurodiverse visitors — including individuals with autism, sensory processing differences, ADHD, or anxiety — and ensures they have access to the same enriching experiences as all other guests.

FDD’s Funding Support

Through a $2,750 Program Grant, FDD helped bring this enhanced sensory space to life. Our investment supported the tactile furnishings, sensory tools, and environmental elements that transformed the room into a warm, calming, and functional refuge for families and individuals needing a sensory break.

At FDD, we are proud to partner with organizations like Comic-Con Museum that recognize the importance of accessibility and actively embed inclusivity into their visitor experience.

The Popular Arts for Everyone

The updated Low Sensory/Parent Room is just one example of how Comic-Con Museum is broadening its reach and welcoming guests of all abilities. It also represents how community partnerships and targeted investments can create meaningful, tangible access for individuals with sensory needs.
