Partner Spotlight: Home of Guiding Hands & FDD Launch Innovative Virtual Reality Therapy Program

At FDD, we are committed to investing in programs that expand access, empower individuals, and introduce new pathways to independence. One of the most exciting examples of this commitment is our 2025 partnership with Home of Guiding Hands (HGH) and the launch of their groundbreaking Virtual Reality (VR) Therapy Program.


As rates of autism continue to rise, affecting 1 in 36 children, families are seeking innovative, effective, and engaging therapeutic options. HGH is meeting this need head-on by integrating immersive VR technology into traditional therapy, helping participants build real-world skills in a safe, controlled, and engaging environment.


With support from FDD, this program is poised to impact dozens of individuals positively and set the stage for a new era of technology-supported therapy in San Diego County.


How FDD Funding Helped Bring VR Therapy to Life

FDD allocated $21,400 to Home of Guiding Hands to help launch and expand their Virtual Reality Therapy Program. These funds were used to:

·       Purchase 20 Oculus Rift S PC-powered VR headsets.

·       Support a year-long VR therapy software subscription.

·       Introduce innovative therapeutic scenarios aimed at building confidence and independence.


This investment ensures that participants, many of whom experience social anxiety, developmental delays, or sensory-related challenges, can learn and practice skills through fully immersive, gamified, and highly customizable experiences.



What the VR Therapy Program Offers

The VR program provides participants with engaging, therapeutic simulations that help build:

  1. Social Confidence: VR creates low-stress environments where individuals can rehearse social interactions, ease anxiety, and promote connection.

  2. Life Skills & Independence: Gamified simulations help participants practice everyday tasks, such as navigating public spaces or managing routines, in a safe and supportive setting.

  3. Cognitive Development: Interactive, visual experiences increase engagement and support learning for individuals who benefit from nontraditional teaching methods.

  4. Greater Access to Care: The program launched with an initial cohort of 20 participants and is designed to expand to serve more than 50 individuals, increasing access to high-quality therapeutic support.

  5. A Shared Commitment to Innovation & Inclusion: By integrating VR technology into therapeutic services, FDD and Home of Guiding Hands are expanding what’s possible for individuals with autism and developmental disabilities. This program is more than innovative; it’s a forward-thinking investment in independence, confidence, and opportunity.
