Building a Brighter Future: The Raymond M. Peterson Scholarship
At the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD), we believe that education is one of the most powerful tools for creating lasting, meaningful change—especially in the lives of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DDs). That belief is at the heart of the Raymond M. Peterson Scholarship Program, established in honor of Dr. Raymond M. Peterson, a visionary advocate and devoted leader in the I/DD community. This scholarship continues his enduring legacy by equipping future leaders with the knowledge, skills, and compassion to drive progress in the field.
The Peterson Scholarship aims to support aspiring professionals committed to making a positive impact each year. In 2025, the FDD Board of Directors proudly awarded $44,000 in scholarships to ten post-secondary students pursuing careers that directly support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), including special education, social work, clinical services, and advocacy.
Investing in the Future of Inclusive Communities
The Peterson Scholarship is more than just financial aid—it’s a strategic investment in the future of inclusive education, equitable healthcare, and accessible support services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DDs). By supporting students who are committed to serving the I/DD community, the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD) helps build a strong, sustainable pipeline of future educators, therapists, and case managers. It advocates for advancing inclusion, equity, and lifelong support.
Awarded exclusively to residents or students attending colleges and universities in San Diego and Imperial Counties, the scholarship is designed to create a hyperlocal impact. It supports not only academic achievement but also cultivates a deep-rooted connection to the communities the recipients will ultimately serve.
One recent recipient shared the profound effect of the award:
“FDD and the Peterson Scholarship have provided financial support and profoundly impacted me emotionally. It's deeply validating to feel recognized as someone living with epilepsy, and it inspires me to persevere in my journey of providing radical care and support for my students with disabilities and families as a future bilingual school psychologist in San Diego.”
Through the Peterson Scholarship, FDD is not only uplifting individual students but also shaping the next generation of compassionate, community-driven professionals committed to equity and inclusion.
Honoring the Legacy of Leadership
Dr. Raymond M. Peterson dedicated his life to advancing disability services and championing equal opportunities for all. The scholarship that bears his name continues to carry forward his vision by removing financial barriers, expanding access to education, and supporting the next generation of leaders in the intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) community.
This year’s recipients include classroom teachers, aspiring social workers, behavioral specialists, and service coordinators—many of whom are already working in the field and seeking to deepen their impact through continued education.
Meet the 2025 Peterson Scholarship Recipients
We are honored to introduce the 2025 FDD Raymond M. Peterson Scholarship recipients, a dynamic group with diverse experiences and shared dedication. From a Ph.D. candidate and SDRC coordinator to a 21-year veteran of SDRC-Imperial pursuing an advanced degree in child and adolescent development, each recipient brings a unique passion, dedication, and heart to their educational pathways, goals, and dreams. These students exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to inclusive, person-centered care and education, which is required for a career in the I/DD field.

Why Academic Scholarships Matter
Scholarships are more than financial assistance; they empower students to focus on their goals without worrying about economic stress. For those pursuing careers in the I/DD field, this support is a tangible investment in a well-trained, compassionate, and culturally competent workforce.
The Peterson Scholarship's impact extends well beyond the classroom. It strengthens local service networks, advances equity in care and education, and cultivates leaders who will elevate the quality of life for individuals with I/DD for generations to come.
