At the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD), we are honored to support programs that empower individuals with developmental disabilities to gain confidence, independence, and meaningful life skills. One such partner making a profound impact is XO Ranch, a peaceful sanctuary in rural East County dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for individuals with developmental disabilities through animal-assisted therapeutic and vocational programs.

XO Ranch offers a nurturing environment where participants build social-emotional strength, foster personal growth, and develop essential job and life skills, all while forming powerful connections with the animals who call the ranch home. Through hands-on farm experiences, therapeutic horsemanship, and vocational activities, the ranch helps each participant work toward independence and self-expression in a supportive, joyful setting.
How FDD Funding Supports Equine Therapy & Vocational Development
Through a $9,200 Program Grant from FDD, XO Ranch expanded its equine therapy and vocational development programming for adults with developmental disabilities. This funding enabled the ranch to:
Increased program visits from individuals from St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center.
Offered opportunities for therapeutic horsemanship, animal care, and ranch-based vocational learning.
Delivered hands-on experiences that promoted independence, improved communication, and increased confidence.

As an XO Ranch program leader shared:
“The funds received from FDD were imperative to continuing our job/life development skills with young adults from St. Madeline’s Sophie Center. Without this funding, we would not have been able to serve these 16 adults with the skills needed to grow in so many life skills.”
By working together, we ensured that participants from St. Madeleine’s had ongoing access to programming that increased social confidence, supported emotional well-being, and cultivated a deep, lasting sense of belonging.

A Powerful Story of Connection: Caleb & Noah
XO Ranch’s impact can be felt most vividly through individual stories like that of Caleb, a nonverbal student who participates in equine therapy on Noah, one of the ranch’s therapeutic riding horses.
During his lessons, Caleb worked on responding to and giving nonverbal cues. One cue—clapping twice—signaled Noah to begin walking.
Caleb’s father, Jacob, shared this touching reflection:
“After one of his lessons, Caleb began clapping twice at home to let us know he was ready to go. Now XO Ranch is helping him work on pointing skills we hope he’ll use at home, school, and wherever he needs to communicate.”
Moments like these capture the heart of XO Ranch’s mission: empowering individuals with disabilities to build communication skills that support greater independence and personal expression, both at the ranch and in everyday life.

Meaningful, Ongoing Outcomes
With expanded programming supported by FDD, XO Ranch continues working toward long-term goals that include:
Building foundational job and life skills for adults preparing for greater independence.
Strengthening emotional regulation and confidence through therapeutic riding.
Supporting communication development, including nonverbal cue training.
Creating pathways toward future paid employment opportunities.
Providing consistent, meaningful engagement with animals and nature.
These ongoing efforts aim to help participants grow socially and vocationally, leading to fulfilling lives, increased independence, and greater community inclusion.
