At the Foundation for Developmental Disabilities (FDD), we believe that art has the power to inspire, connect, and build understanding across communities. That’s why we were proud to support Oceanside Museum of Art (OMA) and its partnership with The Art of Autism in presenting 'The Art of Autism: A Different Lens.' This exhibition uplifted the voices and visions of neurodivergent artists, shining a spotlight on creativity through diverse perspectives.

About Oceanside Museum of Art

Since 1995, Oceanside Museum of Art has brought people together to explore the stories and creativity of Southern California artists.

Their ongoing commitment to inclusiveness and cultural connection has made OMA a vital hub for exhibitions, educational programs, and community events.

Celebrating Neurodiverse Creativity

The Art of Autism: A Different Lens showcased the work of more than a dozen local neurodiverse artists, curated by The Art of Autism. Each artist shared their unique perspective, demonstrating the incredible ways creativity flourishes through diverse ways of thinking, learning, and experiencing the world.

The exhibition not only celebrated artistic talent but also raised awareness about neurodiversity, inviting audiences to see and appreciate the world through a wider lens.

FDD’s Role in Making This Possible

Through a $15,000 grant from FDD, this collaborative exhibition created meaningful opportunities for both artists and audiences.

The funding supported:

·       Engagement of a neurodiversity consultant

·       Curator fees to shape the exhibition experience

·       Honoraria for participating artists

·       Community events that fostered dialogue and connection

With this support, OMA and The Art of Autism built a platform that empowered neurodivergent artists while allowing the broader community to learn, connect, and celebrate inclusion through the arts.

Based in San Diego County, The Art of Autism is a nonprofit organization dedicated to showcasing the creative abilities of individuals on the autism spectrum and others who are neurodivergent. Their mission is to provide a forum where artists can connect with audiences, employers, and opportunities—bridging creativity with advocacy and awareness.

Why It Matters

Programs like Through a Different Lens helped audiences understand the many ways neurodivergent individuals enrich our communities—physically, mentally, socially, and emotionally. By sharing their work, neurodivergent artists not only expressed themselves but also invited us all to broaden our own perspectives and foster empathy, understanding, and inclusion.
